Empa - Materials Science & Technology

Empa is an interdisciplinary research and services institution for material sciences and technology development within the ETH Domain. Empa’s research and development activities are oriented to meeting the requirements of industry and the needs of our society, and link together applications-oriented research and the practical implementation of new ideas, science and industry, and science and society. Empa’s Laboratory for High Performance Ceramics is involved in the scientific research, development and characterization of advanced ceramics and composites. The group ceramic based compositesdesigns, processes and characterizes ceramic based composites for innovative and challenging structural and functional applications.

Projects are the center of attention, in which the following are required

  • ceramic-ceramic composites (CMC),
  • micro und macro layered structures (laminates),
  • polymer derived ceramic composites (PDC),
  • coatings,
  • graded materials (FGM) and
  • ceramics joined to metals

We develop new and optimize state of the art production routes and transfer know-how and technologies to industry.
