Institute of Physics of Materials

The Institute of Physics of Materials (IPM) belongs to the Academy of Science of the Czech Republic, a non profit and non university research institution concentrating effort on fundamental research. IPM has been active in the interdisciplinary field of materials science since its foundation in the year 1955. The position of the institute in this rather broad scientific field lies prevailingly in the research of metallic materials. There are two main research areas: (i) physical nature of processes taking place in materials during creep, fatigue, creep/fatigue and under other types of mechanical loading, and (ii) structure of materials and selected thermodynamic, diffusion and magnetic properties. The research groups are mainly focused on advanced high temperature materials, Creep of metallic materials, Diffusion and thermodynamics, Structure and phases, Electrical and magnetic properties, High cycle fatigue, Low cycle fatigue and Brittle fracture.
